Without having the deepest understanding of the societal undertones in the United States, a lot of people in India, especially the ones in places of privilege are trying to dilute the impact of the message of the uprising in the United States.
Some of them are Bollywood actors with millions of people as social media followers. Without knowing the deeper meaning of what the protests in America stand for, they are blacking out their profiles and even appending their messages with hashtags that not only meddle with the original organizers’ intentions but also send a deeply resentful message not only to the people in India but also people all over the world. Firstly, Black Lives Matter is not your main issue. You need to figure out as a country what you stand for and what you do not stand for. If Black Lives Matter is important for you, you should understand systemic racism, police brutality, and the whole history of slavery. Which is definitely not why you are circulating the message in the first place. It is perhaps some misplaced notion that if you do not jump on board, you might be deemed irrelevant. You are deemed dumb at the most, The fact is that centuries of systemic racism in America makes it imperative for Americans to talk about the situation of the colored people. All Lives matter all the time, but today and during this protest- only Black Lives are being spoken of. So please leave it be and do not embarrass yourself anymore. Find an issue to throw your weight after- The elephant who was killed, the apartheid of castism in your country, the treatment meted out towards Muslims, the pregnant woman in jail for no reason, the quality of your political diatribe, the people left out on the streets during the global pandemic, the lack of resources in the villages, education, the safety of women and plurality to safeguard the beacon of a democracy you once had. I mean you have a lot of issues to throw your influence after. Why come at an issue you have zero understanding of. The world knows, especially the people of color darker than yours, do know how color-conscious and racist Indians are. You fight with each other about the color of your skins, you look down upon people from the African continent”, you beat them and ill-treat hem and you promote whiteness as Godliness. Why are you being hypocritical? On one of your marriage portals, you ask a question about the applicants’ color of skin by asking the user to choose any shade between a white bread to a burnt toast. You have no moral authority, yet to condone racism in another part of the world, if you have not done anything to stomp it out of your own society. You don’t stand for justice and equality of all if you pretend to care about those things but do not reflect them in the work you do, the issues you stand by, and the products you endorse. All of those who tweeted out, see what products you are endorsing because you are not only endorsing those products and ideas for yourself but people you influence and those who think you could do nothing wrong. Look at yourself, please. The world needs honest influencers, not fake, shallow slogans.
