CITY OF DREAMS @HOTSTARUSA
Rating 7/10 WOAH
Remember Nagesh Kukunoor ? The guy who made that highly path breaking movie for the Indian audience that had our heart - Hyderabad Blues ? After making several other thought provoking movies like , Rockford, Iqbal, Dor, Aashayein, Lakshmi, and Dhanak; City of Dreams is his debut into the world of web series.
Somewhere in the midst of an entirely gutsy story line and appropriately casted actors, the story of a married daughter of a political operator of the Maharashtra state is sarkar-ish
The patriarch of the family is a misogynist who believes that his successor, however ill-suited, must be his son. He acknowledges that his married daughter is a better bet, but he still appoints his unqualified son as his successor
The story take an interesting turn when his daughter, having managed the political legion while her father was incapacitated, decides to challenge his decision and floats her own candidature as a more favorable candidate. Story starts with quite a predictable format but then the ferocious side of Poornima Gaekwad ( Priya Bapat) starts getting essayed, the story becomes more interesting. The swearing dialogues are sometimes hard to listen to, but given the amount of swearing that other shows have, its not such a novel phenomenon anymore.
The surprise twist at the end of the season is a keeper for the next season that hopefully will get commissioned for this intriguing political thriller.
Starring Atul Kulkarni, Siddharth Chandekar, Priya Bapat,, Amrita Bagchi, Eijaz Khan, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Vishwas Kini and Uday Tikrekar, the series is written by Kukunoor and Rohit Banawlika, the production is a take on gender politics in the big bad world of Indian politics. The cinematography is great but the editing could have been a little more professional. Streaming on @HOTSTARUSA
